Haarlem is a charming and historic city just west of Amsterdam. Most people just jump right into planning their trip to stay in Amsterdam and don’t even consider staying outside of the city. But, please stop right there and consider staying in Haarlem during your time in the Netherlands.

Why Consider Staying in Haarlem
Don’t get me wrong, Amsterdam is beautiful and a must visit when you’re in Netherlands. However, we found Haarlem more charming, more relaxed and less touristy compared to its famous neighbor. Since Amsterdam is only a short 15 minute train ride, Haarlem makes a perfect relaxed home base when exploring the area.
Top 3 Reasons for Staying in Haarlem Instead of Amsterdam

- Vibrant local culture and architecture: From lively markets, cozy cafes, and quaint pubs, Haarlem boasts a warm, authentic Dutch experience. Enjoy leisurely strolls along the charming canals and centuries-old streets while feeling like a true local.
- Convenient location: Haarlem is only a 15 minute train ride from Amsterdam and 10 minutes from the beach at Zandvoot.

How to Get from Haarlem to Amsterdam
Train: Traveling by train is the quickest and easiest way to get to Amsterdam. Trains depart from the Haarlem Central Station about every seven minutes and take 15 minutes or less. Train tickets start around $5 each. You can purchase tickets ahead of time, but it’s easiest to just purchase tickets upon arrival at the station.

Car: The drive from Haarlem to Amsterdam is longer and less convenient. Parking in Amsterdam can be challenging so taking the train is recommended.
What to See and Do While Staying in Haarlem
1. Grote Markt
The heart of Haarlem, the Grote Market is the central square perfect for grabbing a bite at a cafe, checking out markets or just people watching. This is a great starting point for exploring the city.
2. Grote Kerk (St. Bavoās Church)
Grote Kerk, or St. Bavo’s Church, is beautiful on the outside and the inside. As one of Haarlem’s most iconic landmarks, this stunning Gothic-style church is located right in the heart of Grote Markt and can be seen from all over the city. Originally a Catholic church, it became Protestant after the Reformation in 1578 and holds great historical significance for the city.
3. Molan De Adriaan
What is more quintessentially Dutch than a windmill? Walk along the canals to see this historic windmill offering tours and expansive city views.
4. Explore the Streets
While staying in Haarlem, stroll along the side streets and alleyways to find beautiful old-world architecture and boutique shopping opportunities. Every cobblestone street offers something new and sometimes just wandering brings the greatest rewards. We were here in November and they were just starting to decorate for Christmas. I’d imagine it’s even more beautiful in December with full blown holiday magic.

5. Walk the Canals
The canals (or grachten in Dutch) date back to medieval times and were originally used for trade, transportation, and defense. Now they are a beautiful part of the city adding to the picturesque atmosphere. Some companies offer boat tours if you’d like to see the city from the water. There are also many restaurants and cafĆ©s located along the canals, offering great spots for a drink with a view.
6. See the City From the Water

7. Visit a Nearby Beach
Staying in Haarlem is only a 10 minute train ride from Bloemendaal aan Zee (less crowded) and Zandvoort (more popular) beaches. If visiting during the summer months, day trip to either or both of these spots for a relaxing beach walk or sunset.

This restaurant and brewery located inside a former church is a must-visit during your time in Haarlem. It’s such a unique and one-of-a-kind establishment. Walk-ins are welcome at all times in the cafe and on the terrace. Stop in to enjoy a craft beer with bar bites. Otherwise, opt for more formal dinner reservations in the restaurant.

A modern, contemporary wine bar offers a great selection of wine with appetizers. Located in Grote Market, this is a perfect stop for lunch or a glass of wine before dinner.
Grand Cafe Brinkmann
A laid back cafe right in the city center market. Grab a beer and a bite, sit on the terrace and take in the beauty of Haarlem.
Spektakel – Wereldse Keuken
Calling all foodies. Spektakel is the perfect upscale dinner spot offering a tasting menu complete with wine pairings. Making reservations in advance is a must.

When to Visit
When to visit will depend on your priorities and flexibility in your schedule but each season in Haarlem has its own charm:
- Spring (April-May): Mild temperatures with blooming flowers. This is a great time to visit as it is still shoulder season with fewer tourists.
- Summer (June-Aug): The busiest time of year but also the most beautiful weather and most vibrant atmosphere. Haarlem will be buzzing with outdoor festivals, lively terraces and cultural events.
- Fall (Sept-Oct): Comfortable weather and fewer crowds. Autumn is always a pleasant choice.
- Winter (Nov-March): Winter will offer a quieter, off-peak vibe. However, the weather will likely be chilly and damp. The best thing to do in the winter is visit in mid-December for Haarlem’s Christmas Market.
